Understanding Diabetes
Understanding diabetes is the first step towards managing and preventing it. Essentially, diabetes is about the body’s ability (or lack of it) to produce the required amount of a hormone called insulin to control glucose levels in the blood. There are broadly two types of diabetes: Type 1 requires daily administration of artificial insulin by means of injection or insulin pump. Whereas, Type 2 is more commonly managed by a combination of dietary control and medication, the most used form is tablets.
Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a common condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high. It can cause symptoms like excessive thirst, needing to pee a lot and tiredness. It can also increase your risk of getting serious problems with your eyes, heart and nerves. It’s a lifelong condition that can affect your everyday life. You may need to change your diet, take medicines and have regular check-ups. It’s caused by an imbalance in a chemical in the body called insulin. It’s often linked to being overweight or having a family history of type 2 diabetes.

- Reduce your total carb intake
- Exercise regularly
- Drink water as your primary beverage

Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes causes the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood to become too high, It happens when your body cannot produce enough of a hormone called insulin, which controls blood glucose. You need to take insulin every day to keep your blood glucose levels under control. Managing type 1 diabetes is no easy task, this for some people can take years! However, this doesn’t not affect day to day life, nor does it limit you from doing anything physical.
