Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the digestive system. It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time and can last for days, weeks or months at a time. It’s usually a lifelong problem. It can be very frustrating to live with and can have a big impact on your everyday life.
Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These may come and go over time.
Symptoms of IBS
The symptoms of IBS are vast and can include stomach pains or cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. You may find yourself straining on the toilet struggling to relieve yourself and in pain.
There may be days when your symptoms are better and days when they’re worse (flare-ups). They may be triggered by food or drink. Dietary factors can play a role in triggering IBS symptoms.
Symptoms are often worse after consuming certain products, such as chocolate, milk, or alcohol. They may cause either constipation or diarrhoea. Some fruits, vegetables, and sodas can trigger bloating and discomfort. It is unclear whether a food allergy or intolerance plays a role.
Common dietary triggers of cramping or bloating include foods that cause flatulence, such as beans, celery, onion, carrots, raisins, bananas, apricots, prunes, Brussel sprouts, pretzels and bagels.
Ways to Ease IBS
Experiment with fibre. Fibre helps reduce constipation but also can worsen gas and cramping.
Avoid problem foods. Eliminate foods that trigger your symptoms.
Eat at regular times. Don’t skip meals, and try to eat at about the same time each day to help regulate bowel function.
Exercise regularly.
