Description
Kids Vits for Healthy Bone Development
Are you wanting to aid in the growth and development of healthy bones in your child, and decrease their chance of having a deficiency in Vitamin D and Vitamin K2.
Causes/symptoms
Children at risk of low vitamin D
- Children with dark skin. This is due to the colour of their skin, it acts as a natural sunscreen which means they need to be in the sun for longer amounts of time to make vitamin D naturally.
- Children who rarely come in contact with direct sunlight
- Babies who are born prematurely.
- Breastfed babies who have one or more of the above risk factors or their mother has a Vitamin D deficiency.
- Children with conditions that affect how the body absorbs and controls vitamin D, such as liver disease, kidney disease, problems absorbing food (e.g. cystic fibrosis, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease) and take some medicines (such as some epilepsy medicines).
What causes my child to be low in Vitamin K?
- Disorders that impair fat absorption and that thus reduce the absorption of vitamin K (such as blockage of the bile ducts or cystic fibrosis)
- Certain medications – anti-seizure meds, and some antibiotics
- Consumption of large amounts of mineral oil, which may reduce the absorption of vitamin K
Typical solutions
The typical way to make sure your child has the correct amount of vitamin D and Vitamin K2, is to include lots of vegetables to their diet. However, kids can be fussy eaters and not want to eat them so what do you do now. You get them gummy Vitamins as this is an easy way to make sure they have the right amount of the needed vitamins.
Solution
Vitamin D is essential for strong bones and muscles. Without Vitamin D, their bodies cannot effectively absorb calcium, which is crucial to good bone health. Children who lack Vitamin D are more likely to develop a condition called rickets, which causes bone weakness, bowed legs, and other skeletal deformities, such as stooped posture.
Calcium, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3 represent The Bone Health Triangle. All three are essential for healthy bone growth. Vitamin D3 absorbs calcium through the intestines into the bloodstream, and K2 activates the osteocalcin proteins that put calcium into bone. Without K2, calcium cannot do its job properly.
